I have created a system for handling a custom URL protocol which can pass data to FileMaker and trigger scripts. Though this discussion will be Mac-specific I believe that some aspects of the custom protocol method are xplat.
The system is very extensible and requires no plugins. It can be triggered from a web viewer or other actions and can send data, perform scripts, perform PHP operations, shell operations, send mail, manipulate images, etc.
You can choose to tightly control it or you can choose to allow a lot of flexibility. In its most restricted form, it passes data to a single hardwired global field name and a hardwired script. The developer then has complete control over what actions are actually performed.
