- Easy-to-install WSDLs help FileMaker Pro databases plug into thousands of Internet-based Web Services -
OAKLAND, Calif., October 15, 2008 –- FM::Nexus, the company committed to helping FileMaker(r) developers build better solutions, today announced the release of the Web Services Plug-in v2.0, making it easier than ever for FileMaker Pro databases to interact with hundreds of Internet-based Web Services. The Web Services Plug-in v2.0 now supports Dynamic Function Loading, and simplifies deployment of Web services through FileMaker Server. Working with the FM::Nexus Web Services Plug-In, FileMaker database developers can use standards-based WSDL (Web Services Definition Language) files from a range of vendors including CDYNE, Xignite, and ServiceObjects, plus major online service providers like Google, Amazon, eBay, UPS, FedEx and many others.
"Our customers are excited that the Web Services Plug-in v2.0 is now even easier to integrate into FileMaker Pro. But it's also the power and range of Web services that will make this such a useful solution for so many people," said Vincenzo Menanno, president of FM::Nexus. "A simple calculation in FileMaker Pro can send a customized phone message, get a shipping rate from FedEx, or looking up demographic statistics for a particular neighborhood. There are literally thousands of WSDL available through 3rd parties, so the possibilities with Web services that FileMaker Developers can offer their customers are innumerable."
The FM::Nexus Web Services v2.0 Plug-In for Filemaker Pro introduces several new features, including:
DYNAMIC FUNCTION LOADING -- Previously, you had to install a WSDL file in the WSDL directory and restart FileMaker for changes to take effect. Now, you can dynamically load the functions at any time. Add a new WSDL? No problem. Just run ReloadAll and the functions to interact with your favorite web service become available.
WEB SERVICES NETWORK CLIENT DEPLOYMENT THROUGH FILEMAKER SERVER -- The Web Services Plug-in v2.0 makes it easier for developers to interact with WSDLs to deploy Web services for multiple clients via FileMaker Server. Literally paste the contents of a WSDL file into a field in your database, then call a single script to load the related Web service from any FileMaker Pro client on the network. Web services functions can be scheduled to automatically execute on the FileMaker Server, or even be accessed from incoming web-client requests.
ONLINE WIKI DOCUMENTATION -- A first in the FileMaker community, the Web Services documentation now comes in the form of an online WIKI. Viewable to everyone but modifiable to all those who have purchased a license. Registered users will receive an account and will be able to add, update, or extend the online WIKI documentation. There is also a blog section where users can also post examples that they want to share with the community. This will grow over time as FM::Nexus provides additional examples and the registered user base also shares their examples. Subscribe to the RSS feed to be instantly notified when new examples show up.
About FM::Nexus Web Services Plug-In
The FM::Nexus Web Services Plug-In empowers FileMaker developers to add hundreds of new functions to FileMaker solutions for instant database interaction with Web Services. The Web Services plug-in reads WSDL (Web Services Description Language) files and exposes the functions available, allowing the developer to easily integrate these functions directly into their solutions.
Adding a Web Service is as easy as dropping a new WSDL file into the FileMaker Extensions, or loading the file information into a field which can be dynamically be loaded across a network (such as through FileMaker Server). By adding the WSDL file information, the plug-in makes the functions included in that file available as FileMaker calculation functions. Thousands of WSDL files or Web Services files are available from companies like CDYNE (www.cdyne.com), Xignite (www.xignite.com), Service Objects (www.serviceobjects.com), StrikeIron (www.strikeiron.com), and XMethods (www.xmethods.com). Major vendors on the Internet, including Google, FedEx, eBAy, UPS, and Amazon, also offer access to their web services through WSDL files.
